Rodentaler Ornaments
Decorating Christmas trees with blown glass
ornaments originated in in northern Bohemia where early German tribes celebrated
the festival of the winter solstice . Ornaments in the shapes of fruit,
vegetables, birds and other symbols of nature and good fortune were among the
most common themes. This practice was later adopted by early Christians to
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, marking the earliest beginnings of the
tradition of the decorated Christmas tree.
Early American settlers from Germany brought
their families glass ornaments with them to the New World, and American
glassmakers began to adopt the German art of producing them in the late
1800's. But glass ornaments weren't affordable for everyone, so the
ingenious settlers created their own handmade decorations out of paper, ribbons,
pine cones, cookies, fruit, nuts, candies, and candles. Sometimes the
Christmas presents were tied to the boughs of the tree to serve as decorations
until they were opened on Christmas Day.
